ADULT: Wingspan 34 - 38mm. An easily identifiable moth with a forewing pattern of soft tawny and straw browns as well as pale creams and the odd darker marking. The fringes are chequered and the dark broad cross bar is slightly arched towards its centre. The hindwings are dusky grey with darker borders. CHRYSALIS: Located underground within a cocoon. LARVA: Feeds on various grasses. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. HABITAT: Dry stony and grassy areas as well as dunes and shingle beaches. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded.  July to August. STATUS: Resident.  Common in South-East England.
